ATTN: March is Women’s History Month! Writer’s Relief is celebrating by hosting this Facebook writing event, MARCH OF QUOTABLE WOMEN. Every Monday through Thursday in March, we will be posting quotes from women, along with writing tasks (questions or story prompts) to get you thinking and writing! On Friday of every week, we will select a favorite response from each day’s quote/prompt. Consider this an opportunity to interact with other writers. Get your creative minds thinking, reflect on your personal writing, AND possibly be selected as a Writer’s Relief favorite! On Facebook: In order to make sure you see our posts each day, just click the “Liked” button (beneath the cover photo, to the right) and select the “Show in News Feed” AND “Get Notifications” options.

Writer's Relief Blog: "Punctuation and Quoted Material"

Stymied by pesky punctuation marks and their position in quoted speech or phrases? Does the comma go before the quotes, or after? Does a period go inside quotation marks? And what about question marks—which seem to break all the rules? If you’re writing books, stories, or poems, you need to know the proper way to format dialogue—including punctuation. The rules differ depending on what part of the world you hail from, but if you’re writing for an American audience, here’s the skinny.

“In A Station of the Metro” by Ezra Pound appeared in the April 1913 issue of Poetry. We’re celebrating 100 years of Poetry on State Street throughout the month of October. The project highlights the diversity of Poetry’s authors and its deep connection to the city of Chicago. Poets represented include some of Poetry’s early discoveries, such as Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Wallace Stevens; more contemporary writers, including former U. S. Poets Laureate Kay Ryan and Robert Hass; and local poets like Reginald Gibbons and Li-Young Lee.We hope you’ll tweet photos of your favorite quotes! Use the hashtag #looppoetry.

This manuscript of yours that has just come back from another editor is a precious package. Don’t consider it rejected. Consider that you’ve addressed it ‘to the editor who can appreciate my work’ and it has simply come back stamped ‘Not at this address’. Just keep looking for the right address.
